The Vanishing Green: Kerala’s Native Plants Under Threat

Image
Kerala, known for its lush greenery and rich biodiversity, is facing a growing ecological concern—the displacement of native plants by exotic and invasive species. This shift not only disrupts the natural balance but also threatens the state’s cultural and ecological identity. Shri M.R. Hari of Crowd Foresting,  recent video sheds compelling light on this issue by reflecting on the statue of the great poet Kumaranasan in Thiruvananthapuram. While Kumaranasan celebrated Kerala’s native flora in his works, the poet’s own statue now stands surrounded by exotic palms instead of the indigenous plants integral to Kerala’s natural heritage. This powerful visual metaphor points to a larger pattern of ecological displacement happening across our landscapes. The problem of invasive species is significant in Kerala’s forests and urban areas alike. Studies have identified dozens of alien invasive species in the region, such as Acacia mearnsii and Chromolaena odorata, which aggressively coloniz...

AMARAM – Planting Memories, Growing Legacies

Image
Honoring Lives Through Nature Some people leave behind more than just memories—they leave an everlasting presence in our hearts. Though they may no longer walk among us, their love, wisdom, and kindness continue to shape our lives. AMARAM (അമരം)is an initiative that seeks to honor these souls in the most meaningful way possible—by planting trees in their memory. Even though we cannot see them with our eyes, we often forget the great trees that have stood tall, offering us shade. Those who spread their branches before us… Those who bore fruits for us… Those who rooted deep into our hearts and filled the air with their fragrance… Through AMARAM, we bring them back—not just as memories, but as living trees that continue to grow, breathe, and give back to the world. A Vision That Took Root in 2020 AMARAM was initiated on June 5, 2020, as a tribute to those who have touched our lives. Born out of a vision to create lasting memorials through nature, this initiative has since grown into a mov...

The 64-Square School of Life

Image
What Chess Teaches Me About Decision-Making Did you know? Chess, one of the world’s most iconic strategy games, was born in India over 1,400 years ago. Known then as Chaturanga, it was a reflection of ancient Indian military formations — infantry, cavalry, elephants, and chariots — which evolved into today’s pawns, knights, bishops, and rooks. From Indian courts to global arenas, chess has remained a timeless duel of intellect and intuition — a game where every move matters. To me, chess is much more than a game. It’s a quiet teacher. A mirror. A guide. A school of decision-making played out on 64 black and white squares. Here’s how this ancient Indian invention continues to shape the way I navigate life: Assessing the Board Before I move, I survey the board — identifying threats, vulnerabilities, and opportunities. In life too, before any major decision, understanding the landscape is everything. Whether it’s a new venture, a relationship, or a creative leap, clarity starts wit...
